Naomi Mwaura - If Not Now, When?
Naomi Mwaura is someone who is not content to be a bystander, but willing to spearhead an initiative for change. As the Founder of Flone Initiative, Naomi and her team are working to a create a safe and professional public transport industry in Kenya. Growing up in a family of matatu owner/operators Naomi has the courage to take chances, the wisdom to ask the community what they need, and a passion for making a difference.
Living out the definition of a change maker, Naomi and the Flone initiative are taking on sexual harassment in public transportation, providing safe employment opportunities for women, educational opportunities for sexual health and creating programs for a healthy professional transportation system.
Naomi was among the lead organizers of #MyDressMyChoice campaign that saw thousands of women protest gender-based violence in the Kenyan public transport. In Partnership with UNHabitat, Naomi has co-authored a guidebook titled “Street for Walking and Cycling: Designing for comfort, safety and accessibility in African cities”. Tapping into her passion, she has been involved in several transport projects in Egypt, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania and has been a speaker on the TED Global Stage, BBC, & Aljazeera to name a few.
Tackling resilience from the perspective of societal norms and advocating for protection of the vulnerable population within third world countries, Naomi will inspire you to stand up and applaud the important work they are doing as a non-profit organization.
